If you want to learn to play an instrument quickly, guitar may be the better choice. With a couple of months of regular practice, you may already be able to play simple songs, while learning the first chords and melodies on piano can take considerably longer. Guitar is also more compact — it is easy to take outdoors or on a trip, while a piano, even a digital one, takes up space and usually requires a permanent setup.
Guitar can provide a stronger challenge for hand coordination. You need to press the strings, pick or strum them, and control finger pressure at the same time, which helps develop fine motor skills and finger independence. Guitar requires students to learn chord shapes and note positions across the fretboard, which may make musical relationships less obvious to a beginner. If your goal is composing music or improvising, piano can have an advantage because it makes it easy to experiment with harmony and immediately hear the result.
Choose guitar if portability, relatively quick access to simple songs, and the ability to play almost anywhere are important to you. Piano may be a better choice for students who value a broad musical foundation, want to develop their understanding of harmony, or are considering more advanced musical study.
