A longer music lesson is not automatically a better lesson. The right length depends on how much material the student is working on and how productively they can use the time.
When 30 Minutes Works Well
Many young beginners and recreational students can cover technique, review, one or two pieces and a home assignment in 30 focused minutes.
Why 45 Minutes Becomes Useful
Intermediate students often need more time for repertoire plus scales, sight-reading, theory or exam preparation. Fifteen extra minutes can reduce the need to rush.
Who Uses 60 Minutes Well?
Advanced students, serious exam candidates and motivated adults may benefit from a full hour when there are several substantial goals to address.
Age Is Only One Factor
Two students of the same age can have completely different needs. Current level, attention span, workload and goals are usually more useful indicators.
Lesson Length Does Not Replace Practice
A 60-minute lesson once a week cannot substitute for work between lessons. The lesson provides direction; home practice reinforces it.
